The AI tools from Ayasdi revealed new, improved care pathways for pneumonia after analyzing thousands of patient records from the hospital and identifying the commonalities between those with the best outcomes. The application uses unsupervised machine learning and supervised prediction to optimally align the sequence and timing of care with the goal of optimizing for patient outcomes, cost, readmissions, mortality rate, provider adherence, and other variables.
As of January 1st, medical and recreational (adult use) marijuana became legal in the state of California. Per the Prop 64 measure, adults over the age of 21 can now consume, purchase, possess, and grow cannabis without the fear of prosecution so long as they are within the regulation of the new law… and in accordance with any other policies put in place by the city in which they reside.
Outdoor personal cultivation is prohibited in all zoning districts. Personal indoor cultivation is allowed in compliance with State and City law inclusive of the number of plants allowed and the amount of processed cannabis possessed. Cultivation must take place within the residence, in a locked room or locked out-building. Notarized Property owner permission is required if the property is not owner-occupied. Registration of the address where cultivation will take place is required. The cost of registration is $100 per year. Failure to register can incur penalties and administrative citations.
Artificial intelligence solutions—and certainly, the promotion of such solutions—were everywhere this year at the RSNA Conference, held this week at Chicago’s vast McCormick Place, where nearly 49,000 attendees attended clinical education sessions, viewed nearly 700 vendor exhibits. And AI and machine learning promotions, and discussions were everywhere.
An interesting observation was made in some clinical studies in the mid-1990’s that is noted in Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution. (Avon books) The doctor suggests that a principal ingredient in the fight against all arthritis should be Omega-3 fatty acids. And why is that? Because this essential acid clearly demonstrates that Omega-3 relieves both pain and inflammation.
“It turned out that little hospital was part of what would become Providence St. Joseph Health, the second-largest nonprofit health system in the country,” Klomp says. Eventually use of their Emergency Department Information Exchange (EDIE) solution started to spread across the state of Washington. The Washington State Health Care Authority reported that use of EDIE by hospital EDs had helped save the state $34 million in Medicaid spending and there was a 9.9 percent reduction in total Medicaid ED visits across the state. “That was big,” Klomp says. “There were compelling results around opioid utilization, in terms of visits resulting in opioid prescriptions and related deaths.”
“But Woodlake – a town of less than 8,000 people about 15 miles northeast of Visalia in Tulare County – has pushed forward at breakneck speed, going from idea to ordinance to the approval of two companies’ dispensary proposals in less than six months. City leaders hope to unlock a treasure trove of tax revenue, which can be used to beef up a thinning public service budget and attract customers to a blip on the map found well off the beaten path.” (Rory Appleton, The Fresno Bee)
Each year, to accompany our Healthcare Informatics 100 list of the largest companies in U.S. health information technology, we profile fast-growing companies that could very well make the list in the future. Below are write-ups of the third and fourth companies that made this year’s Up-and-Comers rendition. The remaining two write-ups will be published later this week.

So much remains ambiguous about the regulated future of legalized pot in California, even more so in the Central Valley. As some cities are still waiting to make their final decision, others have banned it outright, and Fresno is soon to embark on the unique challenge of writing new policies for medical marijuana businesses, from growing all the way to sales – but one thing is clear, and that it is going to make for a busy yet very interesting 2018.
There continues to be growing interest, and also some hype, around AI tools, but Sanders notes that AI and machine learning are simply another tool. “Historically, what we’ve done is that we had an idea of what we wanted to do, conducted a clinical trial and then proved or disproved the hypothesis, based on the data that we collected. We have a tool with AI which can basically show us relationships that we didn’t know even existed and answer questions that we didn’t know to ask. I think it’s going to open up a tremendous pathway in medicine for us to both reduce cost, improve care and really take better care of our patients,” he says, adding, “When you can say that to physicians, they are on board. They respond to the data.”
Since its founding eight years ago, Collective Medical (not to be confused with employee benefits company Collective Health) has produced a software platform comprised of two main products. EDIE, designed for emergency departments, connects emergency teams across multiple facilities to identify high-risk, complex needs patients and immediately access care history upon admittance. The PreManage product is intended for a wider population of patients, and is marketed to health plans and providers. It also identifies and tracks high-risk patients upon admittance and discharge from inpatient or emergency care, while allowing teams to easily communicate and coordinate throughout a patient’s care.

Similar results have been experienced across the country. “Collective Medical has been an integral part of our hospital system’s efforts to coordinate care for patients with complex needs,” says Dr. Maria Raven, MPH, MSc, a practicing emergency medicine physician and health services researcher and an associate professor of emergency medicine at UCSF. “With our partnership, we’re collaborating on our at-risk patients’ social determinants as well as curbing the opioid epidemic.”

“That was a major effort, but some of us had been data scientists before we were physicians, and so we parameterized all these calls. The first pneumonia care path was completed in about nine weeks. We’ve turned around and did a second care path, for sepsis, which is much harder, and we’ve done that in two weeks. We’ve finished sepsis and have moved on to total hip and total knee replacements. We have about 18 or 19 care paths that we’re going to be doing over the next 18 months,” he says.

He can thank Patti Green, a former emergency department social worker at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise. In 2000, she started tracking frequent ER visits on a Word document, which allowed her to address underlying causes—the reason behind an opioid addiction, or unawareness a patient qualified for Medicaid. Although rivals, she shared information with nearby Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center on patients who bounced between the two ERs. Doctors loved it.
Besides EDIE, Collective now has other software it licenses to payers and accountable care organizations, but it does not charge post-acute operators, ambulatory providers and others who don't have risk. “Our model is that we license our software to those who could see economic benefit through improving coordination of their members, which makes sense,” he says. “Others may not benefit economically, so we don’t charge them.”

It was the year 2000 and I left Abott’s Habit. A friend of mine was moving out of town and all his friends needed weed, so that’s how I started my delivery service. It was just me with a pager, seven days a week. I couldn’t keep up with all the orders. My team grew to four girls and we split profits evenly. It became more like a private club, with a password to access. Eventually a woman I had a catering company with got upset and reported me to Santa Monica Police. They came in, raided us and took everything. I went to court and had to go through the legal system. Today I have an amazing lawyer who helped us file for a delivery license in California so we can transition to the recreational market.

Hyderabad: Following the extra vigil by Excise and police sleuths, ganja peddlers in city are delivering ganja to a specific location by charging few extra hundreds. Most of the customers who opt for such services are found to be teenagers with a large peer groups amongst which contacts of these peddlers circulate. Psychiatrists believe that providing excessive cash to young kids may give them an opportunity to opt for such services too.

Unlike similar services, Ganjarunner charges tax and their prices can be a bit higher than the average dispensary. But that’s because they pay their taxes and work a little harder to give its clients the professional and discreet treatment they expect. It’s not a high price to pay in a state where it’s hard to tell if all the delivery services on Weedmaps.com are even legal.
Collective Medical Technologies (http://www.collectivemedical.com) empowers care teams to improve patient outcomes by closing the communication gaps that undermine patient care through seamless collaboration. With a nationwide network engaged with every national health plan in the country, hundreds of hospitals and health systems and tens of thousands of providers—including hospitals, emergency departments, skilled nursing facilities, primary care providers, mental and behavioral health clinics, and others—Collective Medical’s system-agnostic platform is trusted by healthcare organizations and payers to identify at-risk and complex patients and facilitate actionable collaboration to make better care decisions and improve outcomes. Based in Salt Lake City, Collective Medical is proven to streamline transitions of care, improve coordination across diverse care teams, and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.
Utah-based Collective Medical, which has been bootstrapped for eight years, has quietly developed the nation’s largest network for real-time care collaboration. Collective Medical’s technology addresses the full continuum of care in support of many of the country’s most vulnerable individuals—patients with complex needs that are not met at any single point of care. By unifying providers and payers through real-time information alerts, patient context, and collaborative care planning, Collective Medical empowers care teams to identify patients with complex needs and help them get the care they need, when they need it, from those best positioned to deliver it. Collective Medical’s approach has been proven to reduce avoidable emergency department (ED) visits and hospital readmissions, ease transitions of care, and eliminate unnecessary risk and friction from care delivery.
The one thing is parking is kind of a bitch. Actually to most people who don't live in ktown the parking is a huge fucking hassle if it's a bit full. But I'm used to this type of shit since I live nearby which is basically like parking hell. But I tend to just pick up my weed in the evening when the flower shop is closed and their parking is open which makes things much easier.

My good friend started it 24 years ago and needed help. He asked me to manage the coffee house for six months. I was doing massage therapy and just got back after studying in Thailand. I wanted to give back to the community. I agreed to six months and stayed for four years. I fell in love with an amazing artist community at Abbot’s Habit. A time that is long gone. This is a time before everyone had a personal computer. They came to the shop to grab the newspaper. They were never known for their coffee, they were known for the community. I really got to know this amazing community.

While California government’s encroachment on local authority is nothing new, cities typically have more than 60 days to respond to legislation. Author of AB 243, Assemblyman Jim Wood who’s bill it was that set the deadline by mistake, has since issued an urgent legislation that is expected to pass the legislature for Governor Brown to sign. However the bill does not replace the March 1 deadline with another. Nonetheless cities around the foothills are taking the matter seriously so as to not fall under any type of State control on the matter.
