One day in March 2012, two hospitals emailed him requesting the software. “I remember thinking ‘this is odd,’” says Green. Then, a nurse from Olympia, Washington called. “How do you guys like being mandated?” she asked. Unbeknownst to them, doctors had proposed Collective Medical to the state to curtail ER visits. Says van den Akker: “If you want providers to be advocates of your software, it takes time and effort. Anyone trying to sell a quick solution to something is in for a lot of pain.”
The history of Collective Medical Technologies has had several twists and turns, but the Salt Lake City-based company that provides collaborative care management tools has doubled in size in the last six months to over 100 employees. Its platform is used in 15 states, and that number is expected to reach 25 by the end of 2018. The company recently secured $47.5 million in Series A funding to fuel the expansion.
The state evaluated a number of different paths and vendors and ultimately partnered with us. In five months, we connected 100 percent of the state’s acute care hospitals. We brought on all of the managed Medicaid organizations. In the next wave, we’re onboarding skilled nursing facilities and non-Medicare and other ACOs. We’re beginning to bring on ambulatory providers as well.

“Every hospital has been struggling with this for decades, managing clinical variation,” he says, noting that traditional methods of addressing clinical variation management have been inefficient, as developing care pathways, which involves identifying best practices for high-cost procedures, often takes up to six months or even years to develop and implement. “By the time you finish, it’s out of date,” Sanders says. “There wasn’t a good way of doing this, other than picking your spots periodically, doing analysis and trying to make sense of the data.”
As a young adult, I was in a very serious car accident. I broke a lot of bones — my second vertebrae, my neck, ribs, a compound fracture in my leg... It’s a miracle I’m not a quadriplegic. I was on a respirator and couldn’t breathe because there was fluid between my lung and ribcage. I couldn’t move because I had this thing holding up my head. A nurse around every few hours to help me cough so I wouldn’t get pneumonia. Eventually after getting off the respirator, one nurse came around and he mentioned cannabis. He said, “Did you know cannabis does the same type of thing to your lungs? It’s a bronchial dilator. The drug I’m pumping into your lungs is a bronchial dilator.” From that point on I realized I had a choice. I never took another pain pill. I just used cannabis for the next eleven months to recover. I always loved cannabis, but now I had an even more personal connection to the plant.
Mitigating the opioid epidemic is a single but timely demonstration of the power of the Collective Medical network. Using the company’s partnership with Washington State as an example, care team collaboration and coordination through Collective Medical has reduced opioid prescriptions coming out of the ED by 24 percent since the program’s inception.
To help fund Collective Medical, Green and van den Akker entered business plan competitions, with the motto “Save lives through better technology in healthcare,” and won a total of $15,000. “We didn’t try to raise money, we were more focused on making sure we can drive value for hospitals,” says van den Akker, who developed the technology using HL7 standards to connect different electronic health records. Green tried to drum up more customers, while holding jobs at National Instruments and later Dell in Austin, Texas.
Cannabis delivery has never been easier thanks to Vireo Health’s New York medical marijuana delivery service. We understand that individuals prescribed medical marijuana can’t always make it to a dispensary. At the same time, cannabis-based capsules, oral solutions, vaporization cartridges, and vaporization oils can be a vital part of treating chronic pain, cancer, AIDS, epilepsy, and other serious conditions. Going without that vital medication for even a day can be painful and difficult.
The idea started with Miss Bliss, a very successful edible line in the Bay Area. She just had a baby and was going through some depression. Her edible line was doing really well, but she felt a disconnect from the cannabis community and what she was going through as a mother. A lot of women hold stigma and shame around cannabis use, so she wanted to build a community around that. Miss Bliss connected with an administrator at Oaksterdam. They reached out and asked me to not only attend a Ganja Goddess retreat, but also speak on a panel. I arrived to the most beautiful property. It’s like summer camp — a girls’ summer camp with weed! Women from all over the world have started to see this. We’re calling this medicine but we’re still afraid to pull out a vape pen in front of our kids instead of a cocktail. Let’s change that.

The rehabilitation of neck injuries occurs in three phases. During the first phase, called the acute phase, physiatrists treat pain the inflammation. After they make a specific diagnosis and develop a treatment plan, physiatrists may offer treatment options like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, mobilization, medication, ice and even specialized injections.

Connoisseurs of both cannabis and fine food can indulge both passions with a four-course supper-club experience from Mass Cannabis Chefs. Customers can peruse menus a few weeks ahead and buy tickets online — prices range from $100 to $150 per person — but they don’t learn the address of the event until the day before. The food is far from traditional stoner fare: Past menus have featured stuffed sea scallops, filet mignon, and cherry clafoutis with fresh whipped cream. And there are occasional vegetarian nights. The cannabis infusion in each course is customized to the individual’s preference.

Businesses may begin their application process with the Bureau of Cannabis Control in Sacramento so long as they have received a permit from the city they plan to operate in. Each municipality can determine their own rules and regulations as to how commercial cannabis will coexist in their communities, if at all. Cities still hold the final ruling on whether or not marijuana businesses can operate within their jurisdiction.
